Suffolk Boys narrowly beaten at England Golf Boys County Qualifier

On the 29th of June Suffolk U18 county squad traveled to Hendon Golf Club to play in the prestigious England Boys Qualifier with the winner of the event going on to play in the coveted England Boys County Final. This is the flagship event of the U18 calendar with all 11 counties of the South East Group battling it out for a place in the final.

Suffolk fielded a very strong side with recent the U18 English Champion, Tyler Weaver, going out top.

We got off to a very good start with Tyler Weaver carding a 1 under par round. A very strong 1 over par performance for Harry Brinded put Suffolk joint 2nd at lunch and only 2 shots of the lead.

Tyler continued his good form in the afternoon with another 1 under par round to take the individual trophy by an impressive 4 shots. The remaining Suffolk boys rallied well with all of them posting good scores and keeping us at the top of the table.

It all came down to Suffolk’s last man, Harry Brinded, who was in the very last group of the day. The news was that Harry just needed to return a 76 or better for Suffolk to take the trophy and with a massive crowd watching Harry didn’t disappoint and pared the last for an incredible 75.

Following the tournament there was a re-count of some of the Kent scores which resulted in them actually scoring better than first thought. All of this led to Suffolk and Kent being tied first at the top of the leader board and the result went to count back where Kent were pronounced winners.

Congratulations to Kent on a truly brilliant performance and whilst its disappointing to have come so close, the performance from Suffolk show’s how strong we are and how bright the future is.
