Suffolk Amateur Championship

It was a scorcher at Woodbridge Golf Club for the Suffolk Amateur Championship weekend. A huge field set off Saturday with the last players finishing nearly in darkness but only the top 30 and ties would see the 36 holes on Sunday.

After the cut, the tournament was shaping up nicely. With a big group of players including Rhodri Harston, Harry Brinded, Chris Phillips, Ruben Harvey, Chris Bartrum, Ben Sayers, Adrian Studd and Will Wright all tied on +2. Woodbridge member Taylor Crisp was one ahead of them at +1 but it was a new face, Andrew Reynolds who lead the way at level par.

The chasing pack got going fast with Ben Sayers carding and 70 and getting within touching distance. Taylor Crisp shot 72 to be on behind Ben. Just as the leaderboard was becoming bunched though, the defending champion, Reuben Harvey clearly had other ideas. Reuben shot a round 2, 65, to take a 5 shot lead into the final round.

It would take something special in Round 3 for the trophy to be prised out of Reuben’s hands. There were some valiant efforts, 69’s from Will Wright, Sam Renville and (our only junior in the field) Patrick Coffey. Plus a very respectable 68 from Josh Robertson but none were quite enough. Reuben shot a steady 71 to maintain the 5 shot lead he started the afternoon with. A special display from Reuben befitting of the weather and the golf course.

A fantastic effort over 3 Rounds from Adrian Studd saw him scoop the nett prize, well done Adrian.

Finally massive congratulations to Reuben for claiming back to back victories in the Suffolk Amateur Championships and thank you to Woodbridge Golf Course for providing a spectacular venue and being great hosts.
