Stenson Second round results

The good old Met Office gave us all a headache by issuing a yellow warning for thunderstorms all day. However all matches were fully completed after all.

Rushmere, becoming used to play offs, would have felt comfortable at lunch against Bury St Edmunds with a 3 – 1 advantage. Bury St Edmunds won 5 the afternoon singles but Ross Howard hung on to win the last match to make it 6 – 6. Captain Peter Robinson selected Josh Cottrell to contest the play off. He won the first extra hole so Rushmere were the winners.

It was a similar story at Southwold where the home side held a slender 2.5 – 1.5 advantage at lunch. Aldeburgh opened up with 2.5 points in the first three singles thanks to Will Wright, Harry Brinded and James Ollington. However in a series of close games Southwold held sway in 4 of them and ran out winners by 7 – 5.

At Gorleston, visitors Haverhill enjoyed their break between rounds with a 3 -1 lead. When Dave Spittle won the first singles that was a commanding lead. Daniel Crosby’s troops however rallied and won the last 7 singles matches for an 8 – 4 victory that was not as emphatic as the scoreline.

Elsewhere Diss received a walk over and there were home wins for holders Felixstowe Ferry, Woodbridge, Stowmarket and Ipswich with comfortable score lines.
