Race To Aldeburgh Final

Sunday 20th October was the date of the Race to Aldeburgh final – this year held at Felixstowe Ferry GC. Essentially the Order Of Merit final. All players with a chance to triumph had an invite to Felixstowe which would prove a brutal test of golf with the wind about as strong as a golf tournament could handle.

The favourites for the scratch event would possibly have been the leader (Russell Oakey) or local men in the top 5 Ben Sayers and Jimmy Price. Despite the odds, anyone in the chasing pack could climb to the top due to the 300 points available for 1st place in this event. The man to take advantage was Sam Renville. 78 was a score very worthy of winning considering the conditions and it meant Sam could leapfrog his Suffolk teammates and become the 2024 Suffolk OOM Champion. A great score of 79 for Patrick Coffey was enough to come 2nd on count back over Russell.

Alongside the scratch event there was a handicap OOM too, this included more events and had a strong field ready to compete. Connor Talbot and Ben Leuty fought hard but it was Robert Turner from Silloth on Solway who won the day and won the OOM. 50 points from two events is a great showing from Robert.

Congratulations to Simon Bearman also who performed nicely in the wind to scoop up the seniors prize.

Sunday also saw the presentation for the 2024 junior series OOM for boys and girls. The Gross winners were George Swallow (Halesworth GC) and Josie Knights (Ipswich GC). The Nett champions were Alex Turner (Bungay & Waveney GC) and Shannon Noble (Ipswich GC).
