WHAT A FINAL THAT WAS!

What an extraordinary day of golf this was as the fast becoming close rivals faced off for the second year running in the final of the Stenson Shield.

The lead up was dominated by the weather forecast. It was awful. The day dawned fair and there was a hope we would be OK. Woodbridge drew first blood by winning the toss and having the honour on the first tee. The foursomes were largely tight however a great chip in from the right hand bunker by Gary Fisher on the 7th hole saw them open up a lead they didn’t lose. 2 matches later Jimmy Price holed out from about 100 yds for an eagle 2. It was not the end of that as Mark Fosker then did the same on the 12th hole. Lunch was taken with the score at 2 each and all to play for.

The afternoon was equally tight. The match referee Mike Rees spent much time with the lightning meter out as strikes were recorded up to 5.3 miles away but never closer. The siren went for players protection however the all clear soon sounded as the storm passed to the south, just.

Back to the golf with the top 4 matches shared as with the last two it was 3 each with just two games playing. In the first to finish Connor Talbot just edged out his opponent for a 1 up win. It was reported that Tony Talbot had won the 17th and so both he and George Swallow stood on the 18th tee all square. In good old footballing terms all results were possible. It was a nervy hole but Tony Talbot hit a great chip and to resounding applause from the numerous Felixstowe players supporters watching holed his 2′ putt for the win. President Charlie Wilderspin was on hand to present the medals to all players. Both captains were full of praise for the efforts of the Bury St Edmunds staff and members in making the occasion special. The president presented the Shield to Jimmy Price and the celebrations started.
