Tom Finn Trophy

On Sunday the 11th of September the U16s traveled to Melton Mowbray Golf Club in Leicestershire for the Tom Finn Trophy. This is the 15th running of the annual competition between Cambridgeshire, Suffolk and Leicestershire. The format is scratch triangular matchplay and as past winners we headed North with some confidence.
The parkland course took us by surprise as despite it being such a hot and dry summer the course was so very very green. Lush thick fairways like we haven’t seen in Suffolk for many many months would mean that we would have to adapt our game, a feat that we failed to manage.
At the turn Suffolk was in a good position, up against Leicestershire and only slightly down to Cambridgeshire but Cambridgeshire fielded a very strong side and with most of their players being plus handicaps their experience and skill came through and they took the trophy at the end.
Despite being in a good position half way Suffolk failed to capitalize and came a disappointing 3rd as we struggled over the last few holes – something for us to work on in the future.
Mr Tom Finn himself was on hand to present the trophy to the much deserved Cambridgeshire.
Jack Rust and Charlie Goodridge got points against Leicestershire but man of the match goes to Will Woods who not only secured a point against Leicestershire but showed true commitment to Suffolk by playing a vital shot which resulted in him stepping into a pond. Great composure and focus and now maybe needing a new pair of golf shoes….
This was the last game of the U16 season and thanks to everyone who has helped and being part of the team (Jim Harrison)
