Diss was the venue for the 2025 Suffolk Open Championship on a day that was colder than the players have been used to of late. Play was trickier than some would have expected with pre-tournament favourites Sam Forgan and James Biggs both getting off to less than desired starts posting 73 and 75 respectively around the par 70 course. Suffolk player Sam Renville had been solid though posting a +1 (71) alongside Suffolk junior Patrick Coffey. The two mentioned players, although tied second found themselves 4 shots back as professional Callum Hilton carded a fantastic -3 (67).
All eyes were on Hilton as round 2 began. The field knew they’d need him to come back to them a bit for them to be in with a chance. As it happened a shaky start for Hilton meant the chasing pack got that chance. Renville carried on his consistent day with a 70 which he’d be forgiven for thinking might be enough. Forgan rallied well but a costly mistake on the last meant he’d miss out this year. Whilst this had been going on home professional Biggs was going about his business nicely, a birdie on his 17th hole and a good up and down on his last saw him card a wonderful 65. The -5 score was enough to get James back to level par for the day and pip Renville to first place. A well deserved 2nd Suffolk Open victory and first as a pro for James Biggs.
Sam Renville did collect the prize for leading amateur on the day which he’d be very pleased about. This years Nett prize was collected by Matt Holbrook of Stowmarket. Matt has been pretty much ever present in Suffolk events this year and must have known his time was coming. Well done to all of our winners and thank you to Diss Golf Club who provided a top class venue in every respect.
