Suffolk Juniors compete in an inaugural U12 “mini league” match against Norfolk

In recent months, Suffolk and Norfolk counties identified the need for more competitive golf at this age group and Sunday`s match saw the planning come to fruition.

The teams were 8 in number and to keep things simple, Stableford scoring (95% handicap) was used, with the best 6 accumulated scores out of the 8 to win the match.

The scene was set on a bright and sunny afternoon; the match commenced, albeit it did rain for 20 minutes and the players got wet for a time! However, played in great spirits, some very good scores were seen and whilst Norfolk came out stronger to win the match, the Suffolk lads played extremely well. The final result being Norfolk 221 and Suffolk 205 from the best 6 Stableford scores.

An individual prize was also awarded which was closely fought. Joseph Coppola (Mundesley) and Charlie Whinney (Thorpeness) both had 40 points, but Joseph just took the win on the back 9 countback.

A great day was had by all and our thanks go to St Audrys Golf Club for hosting this wonderful tournament.

Team members were; Charlie Whinney, Tanner Bowley, Alex Sumpter, Frank Richmond, Josh Challicom, Raife Levermore, Albert Richmond and Bobby Lloyd – pictured with U12 Team Manager Ben Sausman.

The next two “league” matches will be at Newmarket Golf Club, Sunday 24th August and Ryston Golf Club, Sunday 28th September at which a trophy will be presented to the winning county.
