SENIORS CHAMPIONSHIP

Graham Sykes Senior Champion

Wednesday 26th June saw us host the Seniors Championship at Hintlesham Golf Club with 51 players in a strong field. The early starters were grateful for their tee times as temperatures were set to hit near 30 degrees but it made for a beautiful day and fine looking golf course.

The heat made for tough scoring and the long rough in lots of places wasn’t helping either so when Peter Brady (Ipswich GC) out early posted a (+3) 75 he was going to hold the club house lead for while. Really solid scores came close with Trevor Hellyer (Hintlesham) and John Newsome  (Woodbridge) shooting very credible ‘76s’.

Followers of the live leaderboard could see that most players were falling away. The sun was still unrelenting and shade was hard to come by but one man was hanging in there. Graham Sykes (Bury St Eds) was only +1 standing on the 15th tee and a birdie on the par 5 brought him back to level with only 3 to play.

After missing a short birdie putt on 16 and seeing a wayward tee shot on 17 Graham had to compose himself whilst the clubhouse leader looked on. Compose himself he did though, the par he made on 17 he will remember for a long time and the more conventional one on 18 wrapped his business up nicely.

Congratulations Graham.

Nett scores were broken into age brackets with some very strong showings in each when you consider the temperatures.
