Ron Kent 1934 – 2026

Suffolk Golf Union was saddened by the recent passing of Ron Kent who was a junior manager, secretary and past President of the Union. His funeral will be held at the West Suffolk Crematorium on Tuesday 7th April at 1.30pm.

Stuart Goodman, who was secretary prior to Ron, said It was in the 90’s that I had the great pleasure of meeting Ron Kent when I was Suffolk County Secretary. His vast knowledge of golf, especially on the administration side, proved to be invaluable when he was unanimously elected to take over the role of Secretary in 1996 and enabled him to take in his stride the ever increasing demands of the position. His relationship with the affiliated clubs was greatly appreciated, especially when complex advice was required. One of his great strengths was communication and this led to him producing the Suffolk and Norfolk magazine which ran for nearly 30 years. Printed on a bi-monthly basis his personal column always contained plenty of golf humour which was enjoyed by the many readers.

During my Presidential term, I always appreciated and valued his support. I know one of Ron’s fondest memories, including mine, was our attendance at the Essex Annual County dinner where the guest speaker was the late Michael Bonallack. Listening to his playing career and outstanding achievements was a great honour which Ron and I talked about for many weeks afterwards.

Ron’s subsequent election to County President in 2014 was well deserved and was a role he undertook with great pride and commitment.

A committed family man who not only enjoyed playing friendly golf to a modest standard but was a keen gardener who grew vegetables and was pleased to pass on his knowledge (I was one of the beneficiaries!).

His personality and dry sense of humour will be sadly missed. Rest in peace Ron
