Boys Anglian League Qualifier

On Thursday the 4th of August Suffolk U18s played the Anglian League Qualifier against Norfolk and Cambridgeshire at Thetford Golf course.
The format is 18 holes triangular foursomes scratch match play followed by 18 holes triangular singles scratch match play. This means there are 6 boys per tee for the morning holes – a complicated format that always throws up some surprises.
Despite the weather the course was in superb condition. The fairways were burnt and very bouncy but the greens were incredibly soft and receptive. Good golf was rewarded with plenty of birdie chances but poor golf was punished heavily.
Suffolk started poorly in the morning but pulled out a couple of wins from seemingly impossible positions. This left Suffolk and Cambridgeshire tied on 5 points at lunch with Norfolk with 2 points.
The afternoon started well for us and at the turn we were in a commanding position. However, as the day wore on we faded in the middle order with Cambridgeshire scoring maximum points in both matches.
Our tail finished very strong with maximum points scored by Dominic Rudd and Harry Brinded. The last match on the course saw Callum Hughes need to hole a 10 footer on the last to secure a half – and with the tally not yet done this was huge. As so often this season Callum showed no nerves and drained the putt to give us a glimmer of hope in the scores but alas it was not to be and Cambridgeshire came out top with 15 points, 2nd were Suffolk with 13.5 points and third was Norfolk with 6.5 points.
Good luck to Cambridgeshire in the final and bring home the trophy for the region.
