ANGLIAN LEAGUE FINAL MATCH
Sunday 1st September saw the final league fixtures of the season for our mens teams. The out of form first team had a tough challenge against Leicestershire who were all but mathematically champions. Leicestershire second team travelled the Diss to face our ‘2’s’ and here it was us fighting for honours despite needing a favour elsewhere.
The first team got off to a solid start in the afternoon, top pair Jack Cardy and Will Wright lost the last but halved their match. Taylor Crisp and Josh Robertson narrowly lost despite a promising start. Sam Renville holed a crucial 3 foot putt on 18 to get a good point for him and Russell Oakey whilst Dominic Rudd and Ben sayers made a wonderful 2 on the last hole to secure a win for them too. The first team were up at lunch.
The second team were equally impressive. Unfortunately captain James Tyler and his partner Chris Bartrum couldn’t quite see their match over the line out first but Daniel Hedges and Connor Talbot won their match on the 17th in the group behind. Adam Sheldrake and Jimmy Price added half a point whilst Marc Duszynski and Adam Golding were comfortable winners 6&5. Both Suffolk sides 2.5 – 1.5 up at lunch.
The first team got off to a hot afternoon start, Cardy out number one had too much for his opponent taking his match 3&2. Wright faced a strong challenge but won on the last hole. Crisp took a commanding lead and gave his opponent nothing as he won 6&4. Robertson couldn’t quite add to the tally but Rudd and Oakey could meaning Suffolk now had enough points to get their first win of the season and a memorable one against this years champions.
Meanwhile back at Diss the second teams challenge for the title was hotting up after news trickled in the Norfolk were doing them a favour against Lincolnshire. Tyler our first saw defeat but then the points started coming in. Talbot and Bartrum added half a point each whilst Sheldrake and Price both won 2 up and 4&3 respectively. With just one more point needed the Suffolk challenge sadly faded away, a strong Leicester finish meant Golding, Duszynski and Hedges couldn’t get their points. An admirable effort in a good season none the less.
