SUFFOLK SENIORS – ANGLIAN LEAGUE

31 August 2023 – Lincs v Suffolk Seniors – Boston Golf Club

Suffolk Seniors team travelled to Boston to play Lincolnshire in their final East Anglian Seniors League match. A win for Suffolk would result in Suffolk winning the league in 2023.

Boston Golf Club proved to be a tricky venue with narrow, tree lined fairways, lots of dog legs and small greens – a real home advantage playing this course for the Lincs team.

The foursomes matches were as follows:

Ian Woodhead (Newton Green) & Steve Mann (Woodbridge) – LOST 1 down

Simon Goldsmith (Rookery Park) & Phil Smailes (Bury St Edmunds – LOST 3&2

Steve Crosby (Gorleston) & Kenton Jameson (Stowmarket) – WON 2&1

Steve Duffety (Bury St Edmunds) & Graham Sykes (Bury St Edmunds) – WON 2 up

James O’Doherty (Stowmarket) & Trevor Hellyer (Hintlesham) – LOST 3&2

3 – 2 to Lincs at lunch.

The afternoon singles were a close affair with 6 of the 10 matched making it to the 18th hole. The results were as follows:

Ian Woodhead – half

Simon Goldsmith – LOST 1 down

Steve Mann – LOST 1 down

James O’Doherty – WON 4&2

Steve Duffety – half

Steve Crosby – half

Graham Sykes – LOST 2&1

Trevor Hellyer – WON 1 up

Phil Smailes – LOST 5&4

Kenton Jameson – Won 5&3

Singles score 5.5 – 4.5 to Lincs

The overall score was 8.5 to 6.5 to Lincs.

Lincs and Norfolk will play the final game of the season next week – the winner of that contest will win the 2023 league.
