SUFFOLK U16`S PLAY IN THE ANNUAL TOM FINN TROPHY

On Sunday the 10th of September, the Suffolk U16s played in the annual Tom Finn Trophy against Cambridgeshire and Leicestershire & Rutland. This years match was played at the magnificent Royal Worlington & Newmarket Golf Club. This is a very special course steeped in history and has been referred to as the best 9 hole golf course in the world. Tricky undulating greens, humps and hollows adorn the fairways ready to catch out any golfer who doesn’t have their wits about them.  A big thank you to everyone at the Club for looking after all the players and officials so well – we were made to feel very welcome.

The format is scratch triangular matchplay and the standard of play matched up to the venue it was being played on. The games ebbed and flowed with birdie often being required to get a half on a hole. Each county took it turn to be at the front before Cambridgeshire put its foot down to take a commanding lead, a lead that they would hold onto the very end to return a commanding 22 points to take the trophy. Second place was just sneaked by Leicestershire & Rutland with 14 points and Suffolk coming third with 12 points.

Man of the match for Suffolk was George Swallow who put in an amazing performance comfortably beating the top players from both opposing counties and securing maximum points. He seemed to birdie every hole he played!

The trophy was presented by Mr Tom Finn himself who has been a massive supporter of Junior Golf for many years. Without Mr Finn this event would not have been possible – a big thank from all the counties involved.
